Providence County is located in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It is the most populous county in the state, with an estimated population of 626,667 as of 2019. The county seat is Providence, the state capital and most populous city. The county was created in 1703 and is named for Providence Plantations, the original settlement in the area. Providence County contains the entire city of Providence, as well as parts of the towns of Cranston, Johnston, North Providence, Smithfield, and Warwick. The county is part of the Providence-Warwick-Fall River Metropolitan Area.
